I can't decide what is more ridiculous about this story. Is it the PETA folks whining about calling animals "it," or the NIV translators being concerned about messing with the true meaning of the original Hebrew? To the PETA folks I would say that until an animal demonstrates the ability to read, I don't think we should be too worried about offending any of them by referring to them as "it" in writing. To the NIV translators I would say that the Bible was successfully translated into English 400 years ago by a bunch of men who knew what they were doing and didn't have all the politically correct whiners to try to please, so quit trying to improve on perfection.
