Door Knocking Doesn't Work Anymore

Do you remember when preachers all preached about going on door-to-door visitation? By that, I mean cold calls, city surveys, house to house. You walk up to a door picked randomly, knock on it, introduce your church, and inquire about the spiritual state of the soul who lives there. Then, based on the reply, give the gospel and invite that person to accept Jesus as Savior. You leave a little while later with a smile, a hearty handshake, and a promise from them to come visit your church soon.

Does this ever happen anymore? Or are you more likely to have the dogs set on you? Maybe have someone pull a gun in your face? Is this a familiar scenario instead: you knock on the door and all the lights go off. You wait. And wait. And wait. You leave a church tract or information booklet that you know is going to get thrown away in a few minutes, unread.

In the past few years, I have sat across the table from nameless independent, fundamental pastors who have told me, personally, that door knocking doesn't work anymore. Sure, they have a door to door campaign sometime during the nicest weather of the year, when it's not too uncomfortable for their church members. Maybe in conjunction with VBS, which has become the largest evangelical outreach program of the year in many churches!

Does it sadden you when you hear of a pastor who "just doesn't visit anymore"? Maybe he's too old, maybe it's too risky, or maybe his wife tells you, "No one comes when he visits them. He goes to visit newcomers and they stop coming." Soon it's not just contacts he's not visiting, it's cold calls as well. I have recently heard a pastor say that when he is in the hospital with one of his church members awaiting serious surgery, he is often the only preacher in town who shows up for his people, and that he would estimate that three out of four pastors don't even visit their congregation when hospitalized. Does a pastor who does not visit excuse a congregation that does not visit? Of course not, yet we all know the old truism, "You never rise higher than your leadership".

I don't mean for this article to be a critical article. I do want to point out what I am beginning to see as a growing problem and cancer in independent, fundamental baptist churches. I also want to confess my own faithlessness. My pastor started a new campaign at the beginning of this year. "Instead of trying to get a certain number here on Big Day in March, " he said,"I am going to set a goal we need to reach every week. A goal we can make sure we reach, and is dependent on us going out, not on them coming in. The Lord has led me to set 500 doors a week as our goal."

"500 doors a week! Is he insane?! That's crazy! That's unreachable! This is going to be more discouraging when we don't reach it!" my brain said. I didn't openly criticize his leading, but I sure did question it in my head! I didn't say a word to anyone, and I tried to keep my face neutral, but for the next few weeks, every time I heard the goal, I shook my head, mentally.

Witnessing to Unsaved Family Members

The holidays are a perfect time to bring up salvation to extended family.  Loved ones are near, conversation is generally encouraged, they can't hang up on you, and everyone is in a relatively good mood.  The problem is... how are you supposed to bring it up this time?  Perhaps this is the first time some of us will attempt to reach out to lost family members, but most of us do this every year and need all the creative ideas we can get!

Here are links to some of my favorite personal evangelism methods:

Summary: This method stresses the sinner's responsibility for their actions by using the Ten Commandments to show how they have personally fallen short of the glory of God.  Using this method not only reveals what makes us sinners, but explains the practicality of Hell.  Only after the sinner comes to grips with his total hopelessness will he see his need of a Savior.
Most Effective On: Anyone; this method transcends all religious and cultural backgrounds simply because you will be quickening their God-given conscience -- something everyone has.

Summary: This site is bursting at the seams with help for anyone interested in defending the Creation account and the first eleven chapters of Genesis.  Evolutionists everywhere are giving their lives to disprove the first few chapters of the Bible, but the answers to their challenging questions are just a click away.
Most Effective On: Humanists, evolutionists, atheists, agnostics, and family members who are just plain confused.

Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness

I have a vivid imagination and I love looking at artwork. Sometimes the works just speak to my soul, as is the case with the above artwork called The Invitation by Danny Hahlbolm .

The beauty of the table at the Marriage Supper Of The Bride Of Christ spoke to me. The beautiful china, glasses and cutlery, the immaculate table cloth, the perfectly set table thrilled my soul and tantalised my imagination....

As I gazed at the picture, I wondered how we would have reacted if the table hadn't been set properly- you know, like we sometimes do at home? Would a spotted and wrinkled table cloth have the power to draw us into thoughts of heaven and our marriage supper with Christ? How about spots on the glasses and coffee stains in the cups? Honestly, I think it would be a turn off! I think a less than perfect table and setting would be dishonouring to God.... for like it or not, housekeeping does reflect on the home keeper, for better or worse.

There is an old proverb that says that cleanliness is next to godliness...and I think to a certain extent that that is true.... We should endeavour to have our homes clean and comfortable for they not only reflect on ourselves, but also they point to our heart and faith....

A bit extreme! you say? I don't think so. If we are honest with ourselves, don't we silently think less of a woman who lives in filth or dirt? And when that woman is a Christian, don't we wonder about her relationship with Christ if she cannot fulfill her obligations as a homemaker? I know this to be true, because just such a woman once hosted a Bible Class morning with her home almost making us retch as we sat amongst her doggy smelling carpet and armchairs full of dog fur. Not to mention the kitty litter tray wafting its reek from the nearby laundry.

Offering to help her was not an option as this woman had been helped repeatedly by Sisters in her cell group, but never kept up the good work that the Sisters did. She was too busy reading books- Christian books at that. I believe that this showed a lack of discipline and also a rebellion in doing something she did not want to do: in this case, her housework. My poor Sisters were left feeling slightly used and annoyed. They had cleaned the house a week ago and it should still have been reasonably clean.....

Cleanliness is something we all take for granted....and it is something that isn't noticed until we neglect it. But because cleanliness is symptomatic of our heart attitude and efforts, it also reflects on our walk with the LORD. Cleanliness is next to godliness and reflects on God and us. Let's try to keep our homes and ourselves clean enough to not bring shame on us and dishonour to God! by Danny Hahlbolm

Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean [thing]; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD. Isaiah 52:11

Sharing the Gospel

That wonderful Thursday evening, our church’s Bible Class came up with a good compact sharing “tool” to help us, Christians, share the gospel to anybody who would listen. This can also be used as a basic tool for Bible studies.

I took note of the categorized verses, present it in tabular form, and share it with you in the hope that you might get some important ideas from it as you share the gospel to others.

We are not all good in memory and these hinder us a lot in sharing the gospel to others. Therefore, one suggestion offered is for you to print a copy of the verses below, and keep it in your wallets or bags so that anytime you will need a reference, you can use it. From the five categories, you can start anywhere and connect the others as you go along. Friends, happy sharing!

John 3:5,6 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 1:12,13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

4) HOW TO BE ASSURED

John 3:16,36 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 10:27,28 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand.

5) HOW TO BECOME RIGHTEOUS

Galatians 2:16 - Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Isaiah 1:18 - Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
